Under the NSA program, Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture organized two events on the occasion of the International Day for Human Rights. The first event, which was held on December 2, 2010, was an open dialog entitled “Lebanon after the Universal Periodic Review”. M. Mohammad Safa, the Secretary General of KRC, declared the importance of the government’s good intention of launching the human right map and the establishment of committee to prevent torture and violence. The dialog included the role and future work of local and international NGOs. The following have attended the event: Representatives of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, Security Forces, the Committee of the Red Cross and many local and international NGOS. Following are the main recommendations that were published: Develop the NGOs activities and organize a monthly meeting and submit a report in February 2011 to the Human Rights Council in the United Nations.
The second event was held on December 10, 2010. It was a sit-in in front of Riad el Solh Square where mothers of disappeared, human rights activists, and KRC staff stood to call for equal rights to all. The participants held signs and posters that calling for “Stop discrimination and sectarianism” and distributed white roses to people who were walking by. KRC has published a statement on this day entitled “No for Discrimination”.
