The report of the krc for the Victims of Torture - 2001

The psychic and social conditions of the ex-detainees
Presented by: Dr. Ahmed Ayash -
A Psychiatrist and a Neurologist

Let us please present to you the medical report, which depends on reading the social and psychic facts of the ex-detainees and their families.

The instrument of such a reading is the direct contact between the doctor and this category of people through field visits for their homes or working places or through their visit to the doctor’s clinic in Beirut.

First of all, it’s very important to point out to the conditions that surround the ex-detainees as a part in the general situation of economic, social and political deadlock which threats the general psychic stability throughout the whole country. Add to that the government’s or the society’s lagging towards the detainees’ future in this country.

And if you asked about the social and psychic anatomy for the surrounding facts of the ex-detainees and their families, then you just have to remember how the Liberty Tents were crashed in the city center on the National Day for Human Rights on December 10/ 2001. By doing that, you’ll remember the scene of a father of a detained hero drawing a stick at the faces of the internal security forces. If you wanted to remember you might read the famous article on the pages of one of the Lebanese Journals under the title: Hope I Was A Mercenary.

And it would be good if you remember your strike in front of the government house and the official institutions few months ago, where you laid down the dead sidewalks to transform it by your holiness into sidewalks of a live homeland that swarm with angels.

When the detainees were freed, the body that was exhausted by pain resumed its free movement having left in the prison a frozen time for a florid age, residues of dreams and fancy, fragments of ambition and a hope gobbled by the fire of a burning angry soul from the accumulation of disappointments and the growth of the enemies of this homeland. Some looked around to find himself without any job or any chance, all are running after the living bite and all are butting for money. This made some feel that by coming out of the Israeli Prisons, they fell in the government’s captivity for them, for their pain and hopes. The prison was only in Khiam but now it’s extending to include his all homeland.

Disappointment, that destroying feeling, that sensation that burns the dreams and the hopes has muddled the detainee to fall in his hesitancy and end with a concealed sadness with which he tried his best not to let it appear in his eyes in the from of tears. But sadness has his own ways to creep through slowly.

Disappointed from the government, disappointed from the parties that he left strong and promising to come back and find them defeated and impotent.

Revenge is an obsession that comes over the minds of most of the ex-detainees. Who will punish the headsman that practiced torture? Who will compensate for those whose dignity has been harmed? The fact is different and the mercenaries has been honored and rewarded by Israel with thousands of dollars and privileges. Israel has rewarded her mercenaries as heroes while our government treated her heroes as burdens on its treasury; they have awarded a decoration for the models and singers and stinted with the ex-detainees for a health insurance.

Disappointment and revenge blended with disgust contributed to the unsociability of some of them, and the social and struggler resignation. The ex-detainees are not able anymore regain the time they spent in jail, all the people around are in advance of them and this made some of them underdeveloped in time according to their society

The psychic suffering couldn’t conceal for a long time, it appeared in the form of physical diseases that has different symptoms makes the doctors confused. In the form of nightmares where the one see himself slashed on a pillar having his head covered so he can only see his sole smiling destiny or his crying and threatened wife. And in the form of a scream awakening them in the middle of the night to thank God that they have been freed and there’s no more torture or death.

The absence of the detainees affected their families highly especially the psychic – emotional growth of their children. One girl left her school because she was always crying and absentminded, frightened about her father’s destiny. Another girl left school to work as assistance in some office in order to sustain her little brothers.

What else? Torn in history, wounded in bodies, burnt in souls. Tension and screams comes up and down in respect of their psychic invincibility. This psychic invincibility that they used to be proud of while in prison, is no longer strong and supported by hope and interest. It’s now unsteady because of the daily life facts that are offensive for their ambitions and dreams

That’s how some fell a victim of the practiced torture in prisons. Some have movement hindrance makes them socially retarded, others fell down because their psychic stability was declined and this lead them to one of the Islamic Infirmaries and this unsuitable place for heroes. Also there is part of them in a persistent psychic alertness as a result of waiting and expectation.

Finally, we think that the only mean to help our ex-detainees is through the field visits for them wherever they are. That’s why we, in Khiam Rehabilitation Center, are trying to develop our team work to include, in addition to psychic treatment, social and educational workers so that we can cover all the needs of the ex-detainees and consequently help them to reintegrate in their homeland from which duty exiled.

Therefore,

We believe in the necessity of offering the ex-detainees jobs, and building rest houses and rehabilitation centers in the villages of the South, Albekaa and Beirut. So that these places supply the ex-detainees with all kinds of culture and form a meeting points for all the detainees where they can be gathered around a cup of tea or coffee to get relieve from the worries and sadness of this country.
