On June 26th, the International day against torture and in
support of the Victims of torture KRC organized various health, artistic and
media activities.
On June 20th, 2002, a press conference was held in KRC
headquarters, during which the activities of June 26th in
collaboration with Humanitarian organizations were announced.
Mr. Mohamad Safa KRC Secretary General spoke briefly about the International
day against torture adopted on June 26th, 1997. He talked about
the festivities held around the glob on this occasion under the slogan
“together against torture”.
Mariam El Saidi, mother of disappearing Maher Kassir, announced that a
ceramic session denominated “absent body and present soul” is launched in
the Lebanese Detainee home in Kfarchouba locality. She said that this
session is a tribute to all disappearing and coercively absent because of
their resistance, She appealed the International committee to bear
responsibilities and to condemn the authors of horrendous crimes.
Mr. Ghassan Jaafar, Head of the Lebanese Doctors Union, renewed the
commitment of the Union to examine for free ex-detainees and their families.
He called upon the civil institutions and the Health organizations to adopt
similar initiatives. Me. Nehmeh Joumaa, Secretary General of the Lebanese
Organization for Human rights described the role of the civil society as
huge. He added that it shall endeavors to make better the lives of citizens
and ensure human rights.
KRC and FCSLD celebrated June 26th, in the press syndicate –
Beirut where hundreds gathered to commemorate the occasion. Amongst the
meeting, Dr. Amin Madani, Regional Commissioner of Human rights as well as
many political, international, social and humanitarian personalities and
ex-detainees with their families. At the beginning, the representative of
the Lebanese press syndicate gave a discourse than Dr. Ahmad Ayach, KRC
doctor, talked about the psychological and social conditions of the
ex-detainees and their families (appendix 1). Mr. Safa gave a speech in
which he reminded of thousand suffering from torture and violence. (Appendix
2)
Mr. Najib Freiji, Director
of the UN information office in Beirut read excerpts from Kofi Anan UN
Secretary General in support of the Victims of torture. “September 11, 2001
a debate has developped over the means required to combat terrorism. Still
we
should be punctual, the convention against
torture is a truthness, in effect as 15 years before. We can not achieve
security by scarifying human rights.”
MP Marwan Fares, head of the Parliamentary commission for the Human rights
urged the liberation of all the detainees from Israeli prisons and confirmed
his support to human rights.
Mr. Abbas Hamoud liberated detainee, brother of detainee Mustapha Hamoud
talked about his abduction conditions on 1978 in Tal El Nahas, a former
Lebanese police headquarter. He confirmed that one detainee was burned alive
and that many are still disappearing.
Mr. Rida Saad liberated detainee, son of martyr Youssef Saad, accounted the
realities of his father death by Israeli army in the headquarter 17 – Bint
Jbeil after one long day of torture. He urged the Lebanese government to
condemn SLA members as war criminals and to bring them into trial.
Moussa Hamdane ex-detainee talked about his detention experience on 1978
till 1981 in a low voice caused by the torture. He said that his tongue,
head and all his organs were electrified, and that he has become disabled.
Mr. Aassem Alameddine head of “Restart” tribute the heroes and confirmed the
necessity to condemn every type of torture exercised against not only those
we care about but all others.
Ahmad Kaabour, Lebanese singer, concluded the event with songs calling to
end torture.
Future TV organized an interview with Dr. Ghassam Yaccoub who talked about
KRC festivities on June 26th.
On June 30th, 2002, KRC organized with the Lebanese Union of
Doctors a voluntary health day at the home of the Lebanese detainee in
Kfarchouba – South Lebanon.
5 doctors of different specializations collaborated in this day. They
offered health instructions for the citizens and examined the children and
women for free. The villagers were so happy and requested to adopt such
initiative in all regions.
KRC distributed brochures and slogans issued by IRCT on all the participants
in June 26th, International day against torture.
