Gifts for the Children of the Tortured Victims of the Israeli Prisons

In the third annual memory of the evacuation of the south of Lebanon and the closure of Khiam Detention Camp, and having 20 years passed since the closure of Ansar prison, Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture organized an honoring ceremony for the families of the detainees, ex-detainees and martyrs in Unesco Palace on 16/05/2003.

200 ex-detainees and around 400 children attended the ceremony. The children went playing happily in what resembled a family meeting, while the detention mates seized the chance to get back the memories they shared in prisons and to know the news of each others.

The Secretary General of Khiam Center, Mohammed Safa, reminded of the Lebanese detainees that Israel still constrains. He criticized the complete silence that surrounds this issue, confirming that the center will continue in supporting them and offering social, hygienic and psychological help for the torture victims of the Israeli prisons.

Khodor Ghader, son of an ex-detainee, had a talk in which he asked about the child’s rights in what happen today in Iraq and Palestine.

Afif Hamoud, the ex-detainee, pointed out to the problems that the ex-detainees face during the operation of receiving the compensations from the Finance Ministry and how some persons were expelled for not having this or that paper. He talked also about the cost of limitation of succession that the martyrs’ families should bare before receiving their compensations.

After some artistic shows for Al-Sanabel Band and Fares Awdeh Band, the Secretary General of the center along with Anwar Yassine’s mother, distributed the gifts among the children. The symbolic gifts consisted of books and toys.
