Solidarity from Lebanon
An Urgent Appeal to the president of Egypt, Mr. Husni Mubarak,
Warm greeting,
We have badly received the news about the detention of the
journalist, Ibrahim Al-Sahari, on the 14th of April 2003, and
the detention of a number of Egyptian youth for opposing the war
against Iraq.
These arrests were set by the Egyptian authorities against the
citizens, the journalists, the high educated and the human
rights activists since the beginning of the American war against
Iraq and its people. It has been said that those detainees have
been subjected to torture, sometimes using Electrical shocks
without questioning the torturers.
Detaining the journalists and practicing torture against them,
because of their opinions, is a violation for the International
Declaration of Human Rights and for the freedom of speech. It is
a violation for all the international conventions, particularly
opposing torture convention.
Mr. President,
The American occupation for Iraq, the destruction of its culture
and the detaining of its people in the allied detention camps is
an aggression to the whole nation, an aggression that will aim
at all the countries in the region, even those that have good
relations with The United States of America.
Thus, Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture appeals
for your honesty to cease the detention operations and the
restrictions against those who oppose the American war in Egypt,
to release immediately all the detainees, to take legal action
against the torturers and to declare the place of the
Journalist, Ibrahim Al-Sahari.
