Khiam Center's Statement in order to politically address the recent events

The incidents of Dohat Aramoun, Tareek Al-Jdeedeh, Cornich Al-Mazraa in Beirut and other areas, the continuance of firing rifles rejoicing in addition to the completion of power-sharing scene in the new era which we hope goodness from, put all the Lebanese in front of a query about the usefulness of the Doha agreement and the quotas-sharing of the officials, after the fall of all those innocents, to the Government and other state facilities, especially that they have agreed on what they have disagreed upon at the outset, since 2005. So, what is the share of the Lebanese and the civil peace in all that happened but blood, discord and hatred?.

Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture considers that the renewed incidents and casualties, which is normal because the fire is still running under the ashes, require the necessity of rethinking in the proper treatment of the recent events and prior to that for thirty-three years as well as the escalating of hatreds and schisms among the Lebanese, which the officials and sects leaders work only on nourishing it because it protects their interests.

We renew the call for penalizing and castigating the perpetrators, from all parties, responsible for the latest events of May that seems it didn't and won't end soon because these violations will be repeated again at every political crisis as long as the streets are ready to turn in seconds to barricades. Because we are advocates of civil peace and human rights, rejecting violence and torture, we demand people to neutralize themselves from fighting and sectarian identities, which is useless because they are always the only victims.

We, who get nothing from their "parties" but more impoverishment and oppression, must cluster in collaboration with civil society bodies to make a popular campaign for the restoration of national and social cohesion between citizens and hold meetings in every street and region in rejection of war, violence, sedition and sectarianism. We must enroll into a national campaign against sectarianism and its lords; otherwise, May incidents will be repeated in all the months ahead because, and even if it stopped among the officials who invited it and prepared for, its fire will be still raging in the souls.

With our support to the recent security measures preventing motorcycles and roaming processions, but this is not enough because the issue is not only security but also political, for that as long as the sectarian urging continues and as long as the political statements of the political leaders are at the same pace, the security measures remain inadequate to address the roots of the current crisis, which bears its responsibility the political class and not ordinary citizens who pay the price alone.

A charter of honor is required, first, to be among the political leaders to refrain from sectarian and bedevil political statements.

The removal of all manifestations of partisan and flags is required, including pictures of politicians in Beirut and other areas. It is also required a cultural, social, educational plan for venting of resentment in the street and mobilizing the civil society organizations all its energies and capabilities to cope with the situation of national and social fragmentation and disintegration before it is too late.
