The Khiam Rehabilitation Center for Victims of Torture requests your URGENT intervention in the following situation in Lebanon
Brief Description of the Situation
On 19/12/2006 the Lebanese Officials Securities arrested the New TV Channel Reporter, the Journalist Mr. Firas Hatoum, the Cameraman Mr. Abdel Azim Khayyat and the driver Mr. Mohammed Barbar when they were in a press task searching for the truth of Mr. Zuheir Mohammed Saed El-Saddik; one of the accused of assassinating the late Prime Minsiter, the martyr Mr. Rafic Hariri.The General Prosecuter, the Judghe Saed Mirza, claimed on the arrested persons in the offense of aggravated robbery and scaling the building to enter the apartment.
Arresting a journalist in a mission is rejected in principle, and the precautionary arrests is rejected as well for that it is a violation for freedom of expression and Human Rights forming a blow for the freedom of the media.
Khiam center condemns arresting the the Journalist Mr. Firas Hatoum with his fellow colleagues and calls upon the judiciary officials to investigate in the arresting operation, and releasing the arrested people asking not to plunge journalists in the roar of the political sectarian conflict among the different parties of the Lebanese Authorities.
We call upon the IRCT, the NGOs, all the Human Right Defenders and the Freedom of Expression Defenders to strongly urge the Lebanese Government to promptly release the arrested journalists and to put an end to the precautionary arrest.
